Overview

The North Coast 500 (NC500) has been voted one of the world’s top coastal touring route. Bringing together more than 500 miles (516 miles, to be exact!) of stunning coastal scenery, the North Coast 500 naturally follows the rugged coastal edges of the North Highlands – one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. The North Coast 500 is so much more than just a driving route; it’s all about the journey and the experiences you’ll enjoy along the way. Join us as we explore over 400 miles of this world-renowned scenic drive. The NC500 is so much bigger than the route itself – it is simply a guideline that enables you to explore hundreds more miles off the main route, by visiting, staying and setting up base in the villages, towns and hamlets scattered off the beaten path. The NC500 is an experience in itself, with so many adventures and new opportunities to be had within. Immerse yourself in the Scottish wilderness and be in awe of the nature that surrounds you – you’ll find mountains, moorlands, hidden hill lochs, Highland glens and deserted Caribbean style beaches right on your doorstep. Take detours down roads or tracks, take part in expeditions, and experience the Highland way of life and Scotland’s rich culture through amazing food, music and craftsmanship. The North Coast 500 offers a truly unique touring experience, quite unlike anywhere else in the world. The main thing to remember is to take your time – you’re on vacation, after all!

Highlights

Stunning Highland Scenery

Stunning Highland Scenery

It goes without saying that the stunning scenery is what the North Coast 500 is best known for, but each region’s landscapes offer a variety of experiences to visitors. The NC500 encompasses six regions, all unique and different to each other – which is why we set up base in a few locations and spending three nights in each area. By adopting this approach to our travel plans, you will really be able to get off the beaten path and immerse yourself in the mesmerizing beauty of the North Highlands.

Ullapool

Ullapool

Wester Ross in the northern Highlands has gained something of a cult following with Scotland’s tourists in recent years. This is in no small part thanks to the North Coast 500 touring route, which takes intrepid travelers across 516 miles of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes. Nestled in its heart is Ullapool. This settlement has a long history stretching back as far as the age of the Vikings; but it wasn’t officially established as a village until 1788, when the British Fisheries Society built a herring port on the shore of Loch Broom. Ullapool harbor is still used by fishing boats to this day, but it’s also used by tour boats as well as Calmac ferries which operates the enormous MV Loch Seaforth between Ullapool and Stornoway – one of the largest commercial vessels in Scotland which we will also ride. The village spreads out from the northwest shore of Loch Broom to a hill range behind it in a location that’s perfectly placed to explore the Highlands as well as provide access to the Outer Hebrides. We will take the opportunity to explore two of my personal favorite lochs (Maree and Ewe) located just over an hour to the west and Inverewe Gardens, a lush, tropical oasis perched on a peninsula. This world-famous historic garden is one of Scotland’s most popular botanical attractions. It is surrounded by over 2,000 acres of estate managed for conservation. The spectacular vistas on the journey from Ullapool to Inverewe is one of the most spectacular in Scotland, making a visit even more worthwhile. The garden was created out of bare rock and a few scrub willows in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie and is full of colorful, exotic plants from around the world. Highlights include the most northerly planting of rare Wollemi pines, Himalayan blue poppies, Olearia from New Zealand, Tasmanian eucalypts, and rhododendrons from China, Nepal and the Indian subcontinent.

Castles and History

Castles and History

Dunrobin Castle, the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland. Dornoch Castle Hotel is set in the beautiful, historic town of Dornoch and situated directly opposite the inspiring 12th century Dornoch Cathedral. The hotel also boasts two great restaurants, a world-famous whisky bar and its own distillery.

For All the Foodies Out There

For All the Foodies Out There

Don’t let that old cliché fool you – it’s not all deep-fried Mars bars and Irn Bru in Scotland! The awe-inspiring landscapes are more than just scenery; with rolling hillsides, lush fertile farmland, sparkling coastlines, glistening lochs and rugged moorland, it’s no wonder that Scotland produces some of the most sought after, natural produce. With a wild, local larder right on the doorstep, and varied weather conditions, it’s the perfect recipe for producing high-quality products. Food and drink are at the heart of Scotland and the culture, and the North Highlands are a culinary heaven. Enjoy fine dining, Highland eateries, smokeries, award-winning seafood, chocolatiers, food and drink festivals and farmers markets – there are just so many possibilities.

Finest Distilleries and Breweries

Finest Distilleries and Breweries

Whether you’re a whisky amateur or a whisky aficionado, uncover the secrets behind the world’s finest whiskies along the North Coast 500. No two distilleries are the same – as we tour the NC 500 you will find out how these unique locations and stories have produced their distinct tastes of each single malt whisky. The North Highlands is home to some of the world’s most famous distilleries. The east coast boasts the highest number of distilleries, including Singleton of Glen Ord and Old Pulteney which we shall visit with an opportunity to sample some other great whiskies from the area such as Glenmorangie and Balblair. If whisky isn’t your thing there are many fine gin’s distilled around the NC 500 and a brewery or two making some wonderful award-winning beer.

Wildlife

Wildlife

Throughout the year there are many opportunities for wildlife viewing throughout the North Highlands. Dolphins? Check! Puffins? Check! Seals? Check! Deer? Check! Haggis? Not that we know of… We work with a variety of businesses who offer a range of boat tours, including a trip around the Summer Isles in Loch Broom. We may come across terns and puffin colonies, and hopefully see dolphins and whales, among other wildlife.

A Step Back in Time

A Step Back in Time

A history as exciting as the landscape itself! Behind every castle is a story – from the Queen Mother’s favorite getaway at the Castle of Mey to the award-winning Dunrobin Castle near Golspie. Discover what happened to the Clans of Sinclair at Girnigoe Castle by exploring the ancient ruins near Wick, and delve into Highland history by visiting heritage centers and museums. Learn about the ancient brochs of Scotland, several of which can be found across the route, or follow in the footsteps of the fisherwoman at Whaligoe Steps in Caithness, who used to climb the 365 man-made steps, delivering fish every day during the booming 1800s. There is something quite enchanting about reading the Caithness landscape; famous for archaeology and geology, Caithness may have elegant undulations rather than striking mountains, but its historic environment can be quite dazzling.

Discover the Oldest Rocks in Britain

Discover the Oldest Rocks in Britain

At 3,000 million years old, the rocks at the beach are older than the hills! The NC500 snakes through 100 miles of the North West Highland Geopark, the most sparsely populated corner of Europe. You don’t have to be a geologist to appreciate and notice the impressive landscape and rock formations, some of which have left their ‘signature’ on the landscape. We will venture off route and unlock the mysteries for ourselves. Look out for the ‘helmet’ shaped mountain, Suilven or Ardvreck Castle on the edge of Loch Assynt. Explore one of the oldest landscapes in Europe with the Geopark map, where you can choose the rock route trail or one of their pebble route trails.

Dark Skies

Dark Skies

Did you know the North Highlands are the perfect destination for stargazers and Aurora Borealis seekers? While spotting the famous Northern Lights is never a guarantee, however, this part of the world offers the best chance to experience the incredible night time phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis. Nothing beats scrambling to the outdoors to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights – standing underneath the dark night sky, wrapped up cozy with a hot flask, waiting eagerly for the arrival of the Northern Lights or searching for shooting stars.

Golf

Golf

Take to the green. The North Highlands are blessed with some of the most scenic and inspiring golf courses in the world. Did you know there is no complete darkness in the height of summer? That’s a lot of golf you can pack into one day! There are a fine mixture of golf courses that represent the best in links and parkland golf in Scotland. While it is not part of the regular itinerary, we can help arrange a round or 2 for anyone that is interested. Let us know after you book and we will get it organized.

Day 1: Pick up

We will designate a single pick up point at or near the Inverness International Airport on May 11, 2027 by 11:00am. Everyone will receive an email with the full itinerary and the meeting point for our group.

From the airport, we will start our tour from the Inverness Shire taking in sights along our drive.

To avoid possible interruptions, cancellations or delays, many of our guests fly in a day or more before. This also allows time to adjust to the timezone and have a little extra time in Inverness which isn't part of this tour package. We are happy to make suggestions to help you plan your extended stay if you are interested.

Please note: The transatlantic flight from the US is typically an overnight flight so, if you fly out on May 10th, you will not arrive until the 11th (also keep in mind that from the time you land and go through security, you will likely be another hour or so).

Days 1-3: Ullapool, a port village in the Scottish Highlands

Stay at the Royal Hotel Ullapool. Tour the region where you will have an opportunity to hike and taste the local fare, tour a distillery or two, waterfalls and sites along the Black Isle, Wester Ross and NW Sutherland section of the NC 500. We will also be taking a Wildlife Boat Tour with the hope of catching a glimpse of the many birds, seals and whales.

On this leg of the tour, we will include:

The Black Isle (Neither black in color nor an island)

Just a short drive from Inverness, this magical peninsula is steeped in history with Pictish stones, medieval stonework and charming 17th Century seaside villages. The Black Isle is also a haven for nature and wildlife; you will often see dolphins frolicking in the water off Chanonry Point, whilst the enchanting Fairy Glen is home to tumbling waterfalls and woodland creatures. Avid adventurers can experience one of the best kept secrets of Scottish mountain biking at Learnie Red Rocks, and foodies will love the delicious natural larder and craft beer the Black Isle is famous for.

Wester Ross (A must see destination for all)

Slow down and explore a land of breathtaking landscapes, secretive hill lochs, mist shrouded mountain peaks and Mediterranean style beaches.

We will Set up base in one of the thriving communities with a vibrant culture stretching back thousands of years to the Neolithic ages and truly experience this unique part of the North Coast 500.

Days 4-6: Tongue, a Coastal Village in Sutherland

Breathe in the fresh air along the miles of beaches, breathtaking waterfalls, and the famous Smoo Cave as we explore more of the NW Sutherland region of the NC 500.

Included here:

Sutherland (Europe’s last great wilderness)

Experience the most incredible landscapes and seascapes. Sutherland makes up a large part of the North Coast 500, and will leave a lasting memory too. From the dramatic north-western scenery, where the mountains meet the sea, to the varied lands of the east – with scattered fishing communities, award winning golf courses, fairy tale castles, archaeological wonders and quaint harbors. Unspoiled, naturally stunning landscapes and seascapes with stretches of white sand that will rival the Caribbean, welcome to Sutherland.

Days 7-9: Dornoch, Historic Town and Former Royal Burgh

We will be staying at the fabulous Dornoch Castle Hotel during this part of the tour. On this part of the tour, we will drive through the remaining sections of the NC 500: Caithness, SE Sutherland, and Easter Ross.

On this leg of the tour, we will include:

Easter Ross (as Romantic as it is Historic)

Easter Ross is full of history and romance – an area blessed with a fabulous pictish past, unsurpassed views from the Fyrish monument and seals basking along the shoreline.

We will easily spend a few days visiting the fascinating seaboard villages, following the Pictish Trail and drinking in the scenery whilst sipping a glass of the local Glenmorangie or Balblair whiskies.

Caithness (Beautiful Scenery with a hint of Royal Excellence)

Caithness is located on the most north eastern part of the North Coast 500, and serves as the most northern county in Britain to still claim royal connections. The vast open landscape, also known as the flow country, is rich in archaeological remnants of a bygone age. The geological features of the Caithness coastline feature soaring sea stacks, raucous colonies of sea birds, and vertically faced headlands jutting out into the wild waters of the Pentland Firth.

Did you know?  Dunnet Head is officially the most northerly point in Mainland Britain, whilst John O’Groats is the most northerly village. We will get chance to visit both.

FAQs

We have a time and a location already planned to pick up and drop off the entire group at Inverness International Airport in Scotland or the United Kingdom (airport code: INV). For this tour, Your hosts will pick everyone up from the Inverness Airport (INV) on May 11, 2027 by 11:00am (so you will want to be in well before that time).
